A Change in Focus

The message of "Yet"

How do I interpret the message of "yet"?

I love the word “yet” because it conveys a message of something about to be achieved. “Focusing feedback on ‘not yet’ creates greater confidence and persistence as well as encourages students to improve. (Rietig pg 13).” When my students say that they aren’t good at Spanish, I say to them, “ You aren’t good at it yet but you know more than you think you do.” Positive affirmations and letting students know that you truly believe in their ability to learn will go a long way to creating a positive mindset in the classroom. Students really respond to a teacher saying, “you are really good at xyz”. The student heard the teacher say it so it must be true. That little statement will ruminate in the student’s mind until they also believe it to be true. True or not yet true, the student will begin to excel or at the very least do better than before.

Why create an e-portfolio?

Is it simply to showcase the work you've done and your accomplishments? Or is it a place holder for your projects? The answer is yes but so much more. In the video "ePortfolio Why" Drs. Harapnuik and Thibodeaux discuss the reasons why they believe the ePortfolio can be an asset to your work. They also discuss a few reasons why everyone doesn't have an ePortfolio. If the ePortfolio is such an asset, then why doesn't everyone have one? I think the answer is that it takes time, effort and planning to put one together.

Who owns the ePortfolio?

The COVA approach in this class gives us a clear understanding that ownership of the ePortfolio belongs to the creator. By giving us a choice in how we create our ePortfolio, the instructors are helping us take ownership of what we post and how we present our work. Ownership is more than just saying that the ePortfolio belongs to me, it is saying that the ePortfolio is mine in a more personal way.

How it started and how it's changing

I began creating my ePortfolio in course 5302.  It has definitely been a learning experience.  I wasn’t pleased with my first attempt.  I was even contemplating switching to another platform.  In the end, I decided to move forward with Wix once I realized how to change some of the things I didn’t like.

Contribution to my learning community

Being part of a learning community has immensely contributed to my growth in both courses (5303 and 5313). The courses compliment each other and that makes it easier to juggle the workload in the accelerated ADL program.  What works for me in both courses is that they are so interrelated that I feel like the readings apply to both courses and this makes it easier for me to implement what I'm learning in both classes.  I think I can improve on my time management while in the accelerated program this summer. I won’t be working this summer so I’ll have more time to dedicate to my course work rather than working furiously to complete assignments on the weekend.

Updated Growth Mindset Plan

Embracing a growth mindset can greatly impact the creation of a significant learning environment. The growth mindset is pivotal for fostering a culture of continuous improvement and resilience in both students and educators. In my classroom, I emphasize to students that success is not merely about innate intelligence but is rooted in the effort put into achieving goals. This mindset shift encourages students to view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.

Final Compilation

Reflecting on how I will continue to use my ePortfolio to help me become a digital leader involves integrating several key concepts and principles. Firstly, COVA (Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authenticity) will guide my approach. I will ensure that my ePortfolio reflects my choices in terms of content, design, and presentation, allowing me to take ownership of my digital presence. By incorporating my voice authentically, I will share meaningful insights, reflections, and experiences, contributing to the authenticity of my ePortfolio.
